DescriptionMilliken's obsession with the mystery of twilight travel is illustrated by the orange cone that is prominently placed, motionless in the foreground, a symbol of caution or the possibility of impending danger. The blurred taillights of the cars in the background suggest the speed and motion of people on their travels. Milliken wrote his family about his meditations:

"The roads we travel, whether it is the freeway of Los Angeles or any place on our journeys, have a certain mystery. At night while we ride through the darkness we all relax and dream. We forget the things around us; we are a million miles away from the problems of the day. The road in front and to our sides becomes a theater for our dreaming. I have searched for some clues to the freeway mystery. It seems to possess a magnetic quality not unlike space or the surface of the moon."
