DescriptionContains 47 drawings. Beginning in early August 2014 and completed that November, the drawings and paintings in this book include land and cityscapes, architectural studies, as well as scenes of maritime activities; boatbuilding, fishing vessels and the coastal life of the islands of Indonesia. In Bali Miller began experimenting with colored pencil, using color in a more arbitrary way to distinguish different elements of the composition. In "Early Morning, Garden in Bali" he indicated a palm in light cerulean blue while using more vibrant colors for the foliage in the foreground. "Garden in Ubud" used the same device to push a palm tree into the background while emphasizing the graphic pattern of shadows on the leaves closer to the viewer. These colored pencil studies are juxtaposed against black and white drawings which rely on the rich contrasts of dark and light for their descriptive powers. On View
