BiographyPeggy Crawford has traveled widely, but the place that has perhaps had the greatest influence on her photography is Yemen, which she first visited in 1985 with a close friend. The country's historic architecture and dramatic landscape inspired her. By establishing a rapport with many Yemeni women, she helped them overcome their fear or unwillingness to be photographed. She composed a collection of photographs from her travels in a book entitled An American in Yemen. Her images range from portraits and interiors, to historic sites and street scenes. While Yemen is one of the poorest countries in the Arab world and modernity has had pernicious effects on its culture, Crawford's photographs seek to preserve and share what beauty she has discovered in this country.
