BiographySample, popularly labeled the "Ivy League Regionalist," was born in Louisville, Kentucky, and attended Dartmouth College. He began drawing and painting while undergoing treatment for tuberculosis at Saranac Lake, New York. He later became the chairman of the Art Department at the University of Southern California. In the 1930s he was awarded many prestigious prizes and medals from a wide variety of organizations and was elected an associate member of the National Academy of Design. He began teaching at Dartmouth in 1938 and retired in 1962.Person Type(not assigned)
