DescriptionThese modernist influences can be seen in Reclining Nude. It is not a traditionally cubist composition, but its flattened, geometric central figure draws heavily on the ideas of Cubism. Additionally, Carles' harmonious blend of sharply contrasting tones-the chilly blues and greens of the pale skin and the warm, rich reds of the background-is indicative of his talent as a colorist and his admiration for Henri Matisse (1869-1954) and Fauvism. A recent retrospective at the Philadelphia Museum of Art also suggests that his expressive, emotive brushstrokes demonstrate an anticipation of ideas that would be further explored by Abstract Expressionism.
