DescriptionInness painted "Afternoon" before his first trip to Europe, where he created paintings such as "Saint Peter's, Rome", 1857 and "Roman Campagna", 1858, both in the permanent collection of the New Britain Museum of American Art. Afternoon and other paintings like it concretely associate Inness with the Hudson River School."Afternoon" proves that the young Inness was a gifted artist who succeeded in creating such a monumental landscape. This painting could possibly depict New Jersey, where the artist lived at the time. It shows an elderly lady leading a couple of cows and several sheep across the foreground towards a red barn behind another lady on horseback. The stream, bordered by many trees, moves the viewer's eye towards the background where cattle and sheep are grazing in the sun on the hillside fields.
