DescriptionThis painting has a unifying hue related to the late afternoon atmospheric conditions. Its Tonalist approach is similar to many paintings he completed in the 1880's and 1890's, including A Silvery Morning (1886), Chicago Art Institute, IL; and The Farm House (ca. 1894), Jordan-Volpe Gallery in New York, NY. The active role of light, the simplicity, the poetic quality and free paint handling seen in Late Afternoon, Montclair have become the culminating characteristics of Inness' work and the stylistic approach for which he was most praised and best remembered, probably because of its modernity. On View
