DescriptionThis painting was originally exhibited in the National Academy's 63rd annual exhibition in 1888. The tranquil scene depicts four cows leisurely enjoying a summer afternoon. Cows occupy the tree's shaded area, evoking a peaceful aesthetic for the eye to explore. A path winds into the distance providing a sense of depth and visual space. The intimate details in the tree bark and cow hide emphasize their proximity to the viewer in contrast with the distant illuminated fencing.

The artist's brother Ethelbert Allen Moore, former President of the Stanley Works, donated the painting to the Museum. The Moore family included many successful New Britain businessmen and artists.
