DescriptionAn Impressionist, Horton became Monet's pupil in the 1890s. Throughout his career, he followed his mentor's advice to work outdoors and paint similar subjects at different hours and in varying lights and atmospheres. It is believed that Horton painted "Sampans, Hong Kong" during his last trip to the Far East just before his death. A bright, airy seascape, "Sampans, Hong Kong" embodies the exoticism and unusual beauty of the Chinese harbor and its sampans (flat bottomed Chinese boats) which the artist keenly observed firsthand. It is an optimistic, passionate view full of light and it is executed using a subdued palette of rich turquoises and greens. On View
