DescriptionBrown sketched "Italian Beggar [sic]" during his trip to Italy from 1841-46, perhaps in Rome or Florence. Brown portrays the beggar as somewhat disheveled, for his collar is undone and his shabby hat is tipped upwards. He appears downtrodden and his facial expression reveals despair as he melancholically gazes at the viewer. Given this man's social position, one senses the hopelessness and sadness of his existence. The portrait also demonstrates Brown's interest in humble aspects of Italian daily life which he keenly observed. On View
