DescriptionAl Hirschfeld drew many portraits of people in the show business and although, Hirschfeld is referred to as a caricaturist, he prefers the term “characterist.” According to art critic John Russell, “[Hirschfeld] is an enjoyer, not a destroyer.” Since Hirschfeld is not interested in deforming or showing deficiencies in his subjects, he joins them in their pantomime and is able to capture the characters and personalities of his sitters.

Burt Bacharach is a successful and well-known musician and was an influential figure during the 60s and 70s. As of 2006, Bacharach had written 70 Top 40 hits in the US, and 52 Top 40 hits in the UK. He has also collaborated with musicians as diverse as Elvis Costello, Oasis, and Dr Dre during the 90s and 00s.

Hirschfeld started to include his daughter Nina,'s name in his artworks when she was born in 1945. In 1961 he started to include a number next to his signature to indicate how many times the name is hidden in the drawing. It is interesting to note how many times Hirschfeld has hidden the name of his daughter in this drawing of Burt Bacharach. Can you find all three?

Hirschfeld has had a show of his works at the New Britain Museum of American Art in 1999.
