DescriptionIrving Penn was one of the 20th-century's greatest photographers, known for his arresting images and masterful printmaking. He photographed for Vogue and commercial clients in America and abroad for nearly 70 years. Whether an innovative fashion image, striking portrait or compelling still life, each of Penn’s pictures bears his trademark aesthetic of elegant simplicity.

Penn’s iconic still life imagery is recognizable for its clean, modernist, and at times surrealist style. Many of his compositions include disparate objects, such as those found in Sewing Machine with Bronze Head. Although idiosyncratic in its arrangement, Penn’s composition achieves balance and harmony through the refined shapes, textures, and tones it displays.
