DescriptionIn "Moore's Upper Pond", the artist has chosen to create a painterly composition rather than simply document a place or time in history. Even through the medium of an albumen photograph, Moore reveals his deeply rooted connection to landscape painting. Like the Luminist painters, Moore is concerned with capturing an atmospheric, moody, yet crisp landscape. The only reference to man is the small mill, placed within the larger context of the countryside and pond. The idea of man's insignificance in the midst of untamed nature was a dominant theme of the Hudson River and Luminist schools of painting, two movements with which Moore was affiliated throughout his career. On View
