Description"Sunlight by the Brook" demonstrates the intimacy he achieved in his small landscapes during his mature years. By the late 1860s, John Kensett had replaced Asher B. Durand as the main influence on Whittredge's forest scenes. The cows in the foreground imply man's intrusion on nature, a theme which is seldom seen in Durand's forest interiors but that pervades those of Kensett. Whittredge's quiet, gentle "Sunlight by the Brook" embodies tranquility. The viewer experiences a rush of pleasure when approaching such an enchanting corner of paradise. On View
