Description"Figure" represents one of the earliest examples of Cubist painting by an American artist. Weber saw Picasso's "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (The Damsels of Avignon)", painted in 1907 on a trip to Paris. This work represented Picasso's attempt to create a subjective response to the figure as opposed to the objective rendering of reality which had occupied Western aesthetics since the Renaissance. Weber attempted to divide the figure into a series of angular, planar components which when taken together would form a three-dimensional whole. Another artists who fell under the sway of African sculpture was William Zorach.
