DescriptionDrawing upon the rich tradition of European landscape painting, Weber was inspired by such renowned German Romantic painters as Caspar David Friedrich and Carl Gustav Carus. Unlike his German predecessors and contemporaries, Weber favored a less linear, scientific approach to composing his landscapes. This can be seen in "Scene Near Fishkill, Hudson River", where Weber, like the Düsseldorf-trained American master, Albert Bierstadt, pays careful attention to the visual effects of the clouds and atmosphere on the vast landscape and the reflection of the sunlight on the River below. His exquisite handling of the dead tree in the lower left and his masterful delineation of the rocks in the foreground demonstrate his exceptional abilities as a draughtsman. Judging by the dense foliage, Weber most likely painted "Scene Near Fishkill, Hudson River" in the late spring or summer. The aerial view of the River and broad valley emphasize the majesty of the American landscape. On View
