DescriptionAnderson is perhaps best known for his early work as a pulp artist, though he was most active in advertising throughout the 1950s. The turning point in his career appears to have occurred around 1943, when he created the first painted cover for Reader's Digest. The cover, featuring a patriotic illustration of a lone soldier on a battlefield, garnered considerable praise from readers of the Digest. Concurrent with this success, Anderson completed illustrations for numerous magazines, including Women's Home Companion and The Saturday Evening Post.Man with Bible belongs to a later period of the artist's work, being of a much slicker and more polished style than his earlier paintings. It conjures an almost Rockwellian sentimentality for the everyman that is characteristic of magazine illustration of this period.
