DescriptionAfter the Civil War, with the loss of their seed business, competition in medicinal herbs, and no commercial craft tradition, the Enfield Shakers depended heavily on income from dairying. Heavy, thick-walled boxes such as this were filled with eggs for the market. Brother Richard Van Deusen (or Deuson) served as Trustee or business manager from 1883 to 1893. It was usual to have the Trustee’s name placed with a product as an implied guarantee of Shaker quality.
