DescriptionHere we see a typical group photograph, most likely documenting a special family occasion. Depicted are members of the Hart family, in front of the "Landers House," now part of the New Britain Museum of American Art. The house was built in the early 1900s for William H. Hart (1834-1919), president of Stanley Works, and sold to Mrs. Grace Judd Landers upon the death of Hart's widow, Martha Peck (1837-1929).In August, 1852, the Stanley Works was organized with a capital of $30,000 to manufacture hinges. In 1854, at the age of nineteen, William H. Hart was elected secretary and treasurer, and in 1884 he would be elected the company's president.
Mr. and Mrs. Hart had six children, five sons and a daughter, all of whom are married and pictured. Their sons would follow their father with careers in the booming manufacturing business in New Britain. George P. Hart was vice-president and general manager of sales; Edward H. Hart, manager of the export department; Walter H. Hart, manager of the mechanical department, and E. Allen Moore, who married their daughter, Martha Elizabeth, was second vice-president and general superintendent of the manufacturing department of the Stanley Works. Howard S. Hart was president and general manager of the Russell & Erwin Manufacturing Company and vice-president of the American Hardware Company; Maxwell S. Hart was vice-president, treasurer, and general manager of the Corbin Motor Vehicle Corporation.
