DescriptionFauvism: a short-lived movement in painting centered on a group of French artists exhibiting together from about 1905 to 1907, and typified by the work of its originator, Henri Matisse. The artists shared their first exhibition at the 1905 Salon d'Automne. Described as "fauves" (wild beasts), their name was given to them by the critic Louis Vauxcelles who pointed to a Renaissance-like sculpture in the same gallery and exclaimed, "Donatello au milieu des fauves!" (Donatello among the wild beasts!).When I put a green it is not glass, when I put a blue, it is not the sky (Henri Matisse).
Fauve painting is not everything, but it is the foundation of everything (Henri Matisse).
