DescriptionWhen Colman painted "Venice", the Italian city was one of the most popular destinations for American artists to settle and paint. William Lamb Picknell (1853-1897), whose view of Venice hangs adjacent to Colman's, was painted in the same year. Both works share the same clear, intense color palette and strong sense of line and pattern. Colman made striking use of the "glare aesthetic" in which light reinforces form. A vision of nostalgia and romantic beauty, "Venice" is a brilliant example of the artist's sensitivity to light and its reflective properties. On View
