Description"Mist on the Thames" closely resembles the technique and style of Whistler. One observes the extraordinary grime and pollution which fills the air and engulfs the scene in a remarkable, mysterious haze. Pennell adeptly delineated the sources of light through his contrast of dark and light on the buildings and water. They shine like isolated beacons in this gloomy, gritty setting and further accentuate the aura of uncertainty and mystery of the River Thames. Similar to Samuel Colman's "Near Dresden" (ca. 1870s), "Mist on the Thames" alludes to the deleterious impact of British industrialization and manufacturing on London, which in the early 20th century, was renowned for its poor air quality and polluted environment.
