DescriptionRoth was greatly influenced by the etchings of James Abbott McNeill Whistler. He employed Whistler's technique of biting the etching plate, applying the acid touch by touch with a feather, the blotting paper always close at hand. In the traditional process of multiple biting, three main values are generally produced, at most five. By employing Whistler's technique, Roth was able to attain as many as twelve values which enhanced the precision and clarity of his images. Like his contemporary Duveneck, Roth paid painstaking attention to architectural ornament and the contrast of dark and light as seen in "Ca d'Oro, Venice". Roth illustrates the façade of this renowned late Gothic, 15th century palace with its magnificent pointed arches, pinnacles, rosaries and columns in intimate profile. On View
