BiographyIn 1817, Samuel Lovett Waldo forged a partnership with William Jewett, a talented young painter of coach designs. Waldo, the better known of the two, opened his first art studio in Hartford, Connecticut, at the age of sixteen. In 1806, he entered the studio of Benjamin West (1738-1820) and studied at the Royal Academy in London. Waldo was also greatly influenced by the work of Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830). The pair signed their collaborative paintings as "Waldo and Jewett." Waldo painted the faces and hands, while Jewett was in charge of clothing and drapery. In
