Edwin Augustus MooreAmerican, 1859 - 1926
Edwin Augustus Moore's father, Nelson A. Moore (1824-1902), was also an accomplished artist. The elder Moore taught drawing classes and had one of the first photography businesses in Hartford, Connecticut, where Edwin was born. Moore studied art in New Britain and Kensington, and later received instruction at the Arts Students League and National Academy, where he exhibited from 1882 to 1894. Moore worked and studied in his father's studio as well. He won several awards, including the Thomas B. Clarke Prize in 1891, and the Julius Hallgarten Prize on several occasions. After leaving New York at age forty for the family home in Connecticut, he spent time as a newspaper reporter in Hartford, and tried his hand at photography and music.
