DescriptionDe Mers specialized in illustrating the 'modern' American girl. His depictions ranged from sweet, predatory to sophisticated. He often enlisted the fashion expertise of his wife, Janice, to make sure his figures would not be out of style by the time of publication. Consistent with the artist's style, "Rules" depicts two fashionably dressed women sitting casually at ease by an overly large table. The woman in black boldly stands out against the tones of brown and orange, while the other woman is threatened to be washed away within the same color palette as the background. Their faces are carefully detailed which contrast to the blurred outlines and shapes of their surrounding.
