DescriptionCharming and intimate views of Victorian life were a specialty of Edward Lamson Henry. In this period of industrialization, art became a form of escapism from the gritty factory life that many endured on a daily basis. "Teatime", a miniature painting, displays Henry’s virtuosity as an artist through countless details. Everything is rendered in an extreme yet effortless precision that draws in the viewer and warmly invites them into the scene. The basket of knitting on the floor, the fringe of the mother’s apron, and even the small swirls of steam coming from the cup of tea draw the eye in. This quiet and clean scene would have been quite an attractive respite for Victorians so accustomed to the grit of daily life.
