DescriptionLike the Hudson River School artists whom he revered, Gerry was an intensely religious man, espousing a form of nature worship that conflated God and nature. His poetic, somewhat idealized landscape, “White Hills, New Hampshire, Scene on Glen Hills River” is loosely painted, lacking the degree of finish found in his other paintings. The inclusion of figures in the foreground is an indication of the growing popularity of Nature Tourism in the early 19th century, a favorite pastime of society’s elite. On View
