DescriptionMuses and Graces depicts the Three Graces (goddesses of joy, charm, and beauty) and the Nine Muses (goddesses of inspiration, learning, the arts and culture) in an idealized, classical scene. He painted this academic work at the height of his career, three years after returning to the United States. It clearly shows the influence of the Neoclassical French artists Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825) and Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780-1867).
