Description"Cathedral of León", a highly atmospheric, mysterious image, depicts the façade of an imposing Baroque church. Cast in shadows which drape the portal, Washburn created a tremendous juxtaposition between areas of light and dark. Like Whistler, Washburn sought to communicate his first fleeting impression of the scene in the afternoon sunlight's eerie shadows and he ignored superfluous details. He focused his attention on the fluidity, purity, and exactness of the lines in the composition. The work takes on a highly personal, intimate character and contrasts sharply with the meticulously detailed architectural etchings of Arms. On View
