DescriptionChurch's first visit to Niagara Falls was probably in 1848, and in the following years he made the trip from his home on the Hudson River many times. In 1857, the original oil painting was finally exhibited at Williams, Stevens, Williams & Co, a gallery in New York City. Viewers were charged twenty-five cents to see the painting and the same gallery purchased the painting for $2,500, as well as an additional $2,000 for the rights to make chromolithograph reproductions like this one
