Description"Baptism" is part of the Faces of Rural Mississippi series that was featured in a NEW/NOW exhibition in 2000. Cognizant of the similarities between the impoverished communities in Haiti and those of rural Mississippi, he made several trips to the Delta area to document life in the Deep South. Regis fell in love with the local color, music, and people and was particularly drawn to the way that regional traditions have endured over the years. Fascinated by the power of human ritual, Regis captures a baptismal ceremony, which places both its participants and observers on the threshold between the mundane and the transcendent. On View
