DescriptionIn "Grand Canal, Venezia", Duvenck illustrates his fascination with the architectural details of the Renaissance and Baroque palaces opposite the 17th-century church of Santa Mara della Salute, from which he etched this scene. One observes the artist's outstanding contrast of darkly and lightly shaded areas, particularly in the archways and awnings, which adorn the façades of the buildings and on the gondolas and water. Duveneck invites the viewer to relax and enjoy the incredible beauty of this placid, languid scene of Venetian daily life.
