Description“Girl in Fur Hat” depicts a subject who could be defined as a “New Woman” of the twentieth century. She meets the gaze of the viewer with casual self confidence and ease. Because Sloan loved to depict “real,” hearty women, his paintings contrast greatly with delicate images of languid, decorative women popular in the late 19th century. Like many of his contemporaries, Sloan relished using oil paint, something which is evident in his vigorous brushstrokes and thick application of paint in this work. The dashes of color give this portrait a liveliness that is reflected in the model’s expression. On View
