DescriptionThe Hudson River Valley region provided much of the inspiration for his works. Nevertheless, this wooded landscape, like most of his paintings, is a generalized, idyllic rendition of American scenery that cannot be linked to any particular site. Inspired by paintings of the early 19thcentury English picturesque landscape school, Doughty tended to avoid dramatic vistas, preferring landscapes with a meditative spirit, sometimes inhabited by men fishing or strolling. Soft atmospheric light and delicate brushwork characterize his works. On View
