Bill Owens first became interested in photography while working as a Peace Corps volunteer in Jamaica. Upon his return to the United States in 1966, he enrolled in a visual anthropology course in San Francisco and began taking pictures. Owens was particularly drawn to the work of the 1930s documentary photographers of the Farm Security Administration (FSA), such as Dorothea Lange (1895-1965) and Walker Evans (1903-1975).
This image of a corporate executive is from Owens’ photography series and book Working: I Do It For The Money (1977). Groundbreaking for its time, the photographs exposed mundane, hectic, and comical aspects of the American workplace.
