DescriptionBorn in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Cecilia Beaux began painting at a very young age. In 1874, she attended the official Paris Salon and became inspired by the Impressionists, such as Edgar Degas (1834-1917). Upon returning to America, she attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1876 where she began to refine her artistic style. While many of her portraits were inspired by the impressionists and their “en plein air” painting style, Mrs. Elizabeth M. Howe contains a darker palette and somber ambiance.
