DescriptionIt is believed that Richards executed this magnificent watercolor of a headland while traveling in England either in the 1880s or 90s. Many of his most breathtaking cliff studies were painted in the rugged county of Cornwall. Richards paid particular attention to the effects of light and atmosphere both in the light blue sky and in the water below. The coastal scene is imbued with a warm, subdued golden sunlight that suggests it may be a summer day. The viewer notes Richard's adept handling of the large, jagged rocks which protrude into the foreground and to the upper right. An incredible serenity and calmness pervade Marine Cliffs and illustrate the artist's love for the sea to which he devoted himself exclusively in his late career. On View
