Description“Sorrowing Christ “portrays Jesus’ suffering during the Crucifixion. His melancholic, hopeless expression illustrates his despair as he slowly died in agony. Heintzelman anointed Christ and displayed his divine status (alluding to his later resurrection) by carefully placing a halo around his head and adding rays of light which shoot out from his hair. Thus, he enlivened this somber event and celebrated Jesus’ rebirth as the Messiah as described in the New Testament. Heintzelman engages the viewer and invites us to participate in this episode and draws us into the scene. Also like Rembrandt, Heintzelman was able to achieve so much emotion and passion with so few lines and detail by carefully manipulating his drypoint needle over the metal plate.
