Jules Allen is an award-winning photographer who points his Leica camera toward nuance, texture and rhythm found in everyday encounters. Charged with irony and metaphor, Allen's work moves beyond the realm of strict documentation to capturing the powerful and essential truths of the contemporary black experience.
Originally from San Francisco, California, Allen graduated from California State University with both a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts and a Master's degree in Clinical Counseling Psychology - the latter to facilitate the understanding of human behavior. He later pursued a Master's in Fine Art as well, and is currently a professor at the Department of Art and Photography at The City University of New York, Queensborough College.
Parade of Soldiers belongs to the ongoing Hats and Hatnots series, which focuses on the symbolic meanings of hats, and clothing in general, as signifiers of class, gender, and identity. Allen alternatively refers to this body of work as "the haves and the havenots." Rather than affirming certain cultural and racial stereotypes, Allen also "wanted to show a culture of activity. I was tired of seeing photographs of black people sitting on the porch doing nothing. Being victimized. Being dependent. We do things."
