DescriptionMrs. Cushman's House is an example of Wyeth's egg tempera paintings, a medium he adopted after the birth of his first son in 1936. Using a combination of memory and imagination, Wyeth approached his paintings with painstaking consideration towards the preliminary drawing which he transferred onto panel. Whereas Wyeth could escape into a fantasy world through his illustrations, his paintings are displays of the artist's own thoughts and insecurities. The bleak atmosphere and dull palette of "Mrs. Cushman's House", for example, suggest feelings of isolation and reflection.
