Charles Russell LoomisAmerican, 1857 - 1936

Born in Windsor, Connecticut, Charles Russell Loomis moved to Hartford in 1865. He graduated from the Yale School of Fine Arts in 1876 and was an assistant instructor there until 1882, while still maintaining a studio in Hartford. At the time, John Ferguson Weir (1841-1926) was the director of the School and the faculty consisted of only five instructors. After leaving Yale, Loomis assisted James Wells Champney (1843-1903), the sole instructor at the Hartford Art School, which is now part of the University of Hartford. Loomis spent his summers sketching throughout New England and New York,
