Cauleen Smith

Cauleen Smith (b. 1967) is an interdisciplinary artist whose work reflect upon the everday possibilities of the imagination. She is best known for her experimental works that address the African American identity, specficially the issues facing black women today. In her videos and installations, she pays homage to Black spiritual and cultural history through the writings of Shaker visionary Rebecca Cox Jackson, abolitionist Sojourner Truth, and jazz composer and spiritual leader Alice Coltrane, among others. More recently, protests against racial violence and discrimination have inspired her to create series of banners and neon sculptures that acknowledge the lives of black victims of racially-motivated violence. Smith's work addresses the struggles of earlier geneartions of Americans, as well as the journey that US citizens continue today in teh fight for equal rights.
