Steve Rosenthalb. 1940

Steve Rosenthal took up photography while he was in architecture school at Harvard. After working for several years at an architecture firm in Cambridge, MA, he shifted his focus to photography full time. His work as a commercial architectural photographer earned him recognition as one of the best in his field. Beginning in 1965, Rosenthal devoted his personal time to photographing New England churches built in the 18thand 19th centuries. His goal was to preserve what he considers integral to the New England landscape: these simple yet impressive structures built not by trained architects but by local carpenters, inspired by traditional design. These photographs, taken over a span of 45 years, make up a book entitled White on White: Churches of Rural New England.
