Amos Sewell, born in San Francisco, was a banker before he decided to pursue the arts and enroll in night classes at the California School of Fine Arts. In 1931 he moved to New York where he studied alongside Guy Pene du Bois (1884-1958), Harvey Dunn (1884-1952) and Julian Levi (1900-1982) at the Arts Students League and the Grand Central School of Art. He received his first freelance illustration assignments from Pulp Fiction publications and in 1937 he began illustrating covers for the Saturday Evening Post and soon became a regular contributor.
