Description“Rescue” depicts four men on the edge of a cliff. The relatively uncomplicated landscape allows the viewer to focus on the varying emotions communicated by the facial expressions and postures of the figures. A sense of happiness, relief, and wonderment permeate the work. It is unclear whether these men are the rescuers or the rescuees, but it is clear that the event taking place is a joyful one. It is possible that this image illustrates an event that occurred during the Korean War (1950-53). “Rescue” possesses a photographic quality which most likely derives from one of Lovell’s full-scale charcoal studies that he traditionally created in order to understand the range of values that would be present in his final oil paintings. On View
