Description“A Market Woman” depicts a common woman returning from the market. The painting was debuted at the Macbeth Gallery, the very gallery that held the first exhibition of The Eight in 1908. This group included Robert Henri and came to be known for their interest in authentically depicting daily life in Manhattan. Brackman remained faithful to his teacher’s ideas by using a neutral color palette and simple background to highlight an ordinary moment in life. The slight tilt of the woman’s head and the implication of movement captured in her posture are characteristic of Brackman’s treatment of the figure. The inclusion of the basket with a goose and vegetables recalls the artist’s declaration that still life painting is the highest form of art.On View
