DescriptionDuring the first half of the 20th century, Europe was a constant battleground. This allegorical painting shows a broken doll, a symbol of civilization, draped over a misshapen gourd. Pins connected by wire or threads indicate either shifting borders or military targets. Bohrod's blend of realism and fantasy produced a sad commentary on the tragic events endured by Europeans from World War I until the Cold War of the late 1950s, when Europa was painted. This sketch was preparatory for the artist's full-scale painting of the same subject.On View
