DescriptionBy 1915, when Glackens painted this portrait, his art had taken a new direction, inspired by the work of the French Impressionist Pierre-Auguste Renoir. In emulation of Renoir's lush surfaces, Glackens's brushstrokes became longer and more feathery and his colors stronger. His subjects ranged from floral still lifes and beach scenes to introspective portraits like this one, in which the vivid palette seems at odds with the sitter's melancholy expression. On View
