DescriptionStevan Dohanos drew his inspiration from the scenes and people he observed in Westport and used the town's residents and his own family members as models. His paintings share a similar sense of irony, wit and appreciation for small-town life with the illustrations of Norman Rockwell, who worked alongside Dohanos at the "Saturday Evening Post". "Sketch for Rainy Vacationers, Saturday Evening Post", captures a prosaic moment experienced by most Americans: family plans ruined by bad weather. This sketch lacks the sense of disappointment and frustration shared by the family members that is ultimately incorporated into the finished painting. Instead, the atmosphere is similar to a lazy summer afternoon. By closely studying the preliminary drawing, one can better understand the artist's process of editing and selecting material for the final product. The donor is the small boy on the steps. R is the son of the Museum's founding Director, Sanford B.D. Low.
